Welcome to River City—beautiful, historic Columbia, South Carolina! Our city is not only the state’s capital, but also the county seat of Richland County and the center of the Columbia–Newberry combined metro region, named to honor Christopher Columbus. Created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1786, Columbia was selected for its ideal location at the geographic center of the state and at the confluence of three rivers. In 1860, the South Carolina Secession Convention drafted a resolution to secede from the union of states. In 1865, much of Columbia was destroyed by fire while under Union occupation during the Civil War. However, many historic structures were saved from destruction and still others have been repaired, restored and maintained. Local military installations include the South Carolina Air National Guard’s McEntire Joint National Guard Station and the U.S. Army's Fort Jackson training post. Historic destinations include the South Carolina State Museum, McKissick Museum, Hampton-Preston House, the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, Robert Mills House, Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens and the copper-domed South Carolina Statehouse. The Columbia Riverbanks Region’s unique location affords nature lovers the opportunity to enjoy both land and water—Columbia is situated on three rivers (Saluda, Broad and Congaree) and is equidistant from the Atlantic Ocean and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
